BLVR covers the Bruins,
Lakers, Vikings and Reds who by fate or destiny became the favorite teams long
ago of a young kid growing up in Southern California.
BRUINS
Former UCLA star Arron Afflalo joined the Denver Nuggets today after averaging 4.9 points in 74 games last season with the Detroit Pistons. Afflalo, who helped Coach Ben Howland steer the UCLA basketball program in the right direction, is a good defender and a proven winner. UCLA fans will remember Afflalo's intensity and passion he brought to the Bruins.
LAKERS
Speaking of Afflalo, he was on the floor during March Madness 2006 when the Bruins came back from 17 down to beat Gonzaga and their star, Adam Morrison.
That really does never get old. Morrison, of course, is a member of the Lakers now and is signed through next season. He's playing summer ball for the Lakers in Las Vegas and lead the team with 24 points in its victorious summer league debut.
VIKINGS
Former temporary Viking Brock Lesnar successfully defended his UFC heavyweight title Saturday night, and then acted like a complete idiot after the match by taunting his opponent, Frank Mir, and making an obscene gesture toward the booing crowd. Lesnar, a former pro wrestler who apparently still has some WWE theatrics left in him, apologized profusely later.
REDS
Finally, it's the All-Star break. The Reds are 42-45 at the break and five games behind the Central Division-leading St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds limped into the break by losing 2-of-3 to the banged up New York Mets. To add injury to insult, the Reds also lost right fielder Jay Bruce on Saturday when he broke his right wrist while trying to make a sliding catch. The latest report is that Bruce didn't suffer any damage to tendons or ligaments and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.
None of this bodes well for the Reds, who started the season with high expectations that the young squad could make a run for the wildcard spot. The Cardinals are probably too talented for the Reds to catch, but if the Reds can catch fire in the second half of the season, there's an outside (way outside) chance that they could catch the San Francisco Giants for that wildcard spot. Reds manager Dusty Baker will really have to pull one out of his cap for the Reds to make the playoffs.
